How we feel about how we feel is much more important than the particular emotion we are experiencing. Sometimes we feel happy, kind, confident, blissful. At other times we feel angry, terrified, arrogant, low, or small .
How do you relate to these various emotional states? Do you grasp and hold the pleasant emotion hoping it won’t change.? When an unpleasant or difficult emotion arises, do you distract , ignore, deny or fight it, hoping to get rid of it?
Sometimes life goes very well and sometimes it can be very difficult with lots of problems and obstacles.
Welcoming and befriending all these experiences, letting them come and go, using difficult experiences as an opportunity is the foundation of well-being and compassion.
What we reject in ourselves, we will reject in others. If we are at war with ourselves and our life we will go to war with others. If we are at peace in ourselves we will naturally be at peace with others.
